IE vs Firefox – Registry Entries

2008-08-24

Below is a registry key that can be used for at least Windows XP to determine which browser has been selected as the default browser. I used it in my Perfect Keyboard macros to create an entry on my Launch Browser menu that would be aware of the current user choice.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet]
@=”FIREFOX.EXE”

— vs ———————————————

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet]
@=”IEXPLORE.EXE”

I’ll bet that this registry entry has been present in previous versions of Windows also.

Tags vs Categories

2008-08-20

Seems I can have both tag and category clouds in WordPress, sweet! I know that tags can be sprinkled anywhere in posts, but what about categories? I see that categories can be hierarchical which tags cannot do by design.

I get a checkbox list of categories when creating a post. I’m putting this post in every category except “Uncategorized”

I have to enter tags manually, separating them with commas. I sure wish it could give me a list of my currently used tags. Perhaps I just haven’t found the list yet…   Ah, it has a type-ahead in the tag textbox for currently used tags, but you have to know the first letter of the tag. Better than nothing.

Ambigrams

2007-12-30
I’d never heard of an ambigram before, but like other word-play like palindromes, I found ambigrams very interesting also. An ambigram is a graphic that spells a word as presented, but also in another direction or orientation.

Ambigram.net is an excellent site that has several ambigrams created by the author. The site has gallery pages that have ambigrams of some names including my own. Page 4 has my name, David, that is a Flash program and will rotate when clicked to show the other direction.

Here are some other ambigrams of David/Dave:

Dave.gif (2.1KB; 258x93 pixels)
dave.jpg (14.4KB; 400x142 pixels)
Ambigram - dave.jpg (4.6KB; 246x96 pixels)
david.jpg (77.1KB; 400x400 pixels)

APOD — Astronomy Picture of the Day

2007-11-10

I love astronomy. Check out the Astronomy Picture of the Day. Another favorite of mine is NASA’s Image of the Day. Pictures about astronomy seems to make great computer wallpaper as I must have over 200 in my pictures folder

Jungle Disk Again

2007-10-24

Seems that signing up for the demo of Jungle Disk opened a credit card account with A9 Amazon. When I received the card in the mail, I called and terminated the account. While I still think that Jungle Disk is a good idea, its time has not come for me. The demo seemed to be programmatically sound but the signup process was vague and disconcerting.

Jungle Disk

2007-10-7

I heard about a new backup service that works in conjunction with Amazon Web Services to backup your data off-site supposedly for a very low price. Yesterday I installed the software from Jungle Disk and today I’ve been trying to get the correct keys so I can test it. I believe I have all the keys installed correctly, now I just have to figure out how to tell it to backup a portion of my drive. I setup the billing to my Consulting credit card.

Good Day

2007-09-2

Just like the song, it’s been a good day. I should be doing Franklin preparation but I’ve been playing with a WordPress avatar and installing OneNote 2007 on Northstar.

OneNote 2007

2007-08-27

Since the tip from Todd Cochrane didn’t work in OneNote 2003, I need to install OneNote 2007 and see if it will work with the latest version of the OneNote software.

New Software

2007-08-27

The new software I purchased through e-Academy arrived today. Unfortunately, I was under the weather and didn’t feel well enough to install it. I spoke to Vista Developers about a trip to North Carolina in October to see some land. I told him that we needed to wait until next summer as this year won’t work for us.
